Wildfires in Europe: How does this affect your travel?
Posted in Travel Insurance on 19 August 2026
If you’re planning to travel to one of the locations in Europe that’s currently battling wildfires due to the extreme temperatures, you might be concerned about how this will affect your holiday.
At time of writing, Able2Travel are aware of wildfires in the following popular destinations; the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece, and our thoughts are with all affected by them.
Can I still travel to an area affected by wildfire?
Unless official channels, both in the UK or local authorities related to your destination advise against it, you can still go on holiday. Able2Travel would recommend keeping an eye on how the wildfires may affect your plans, and being flexible in case alternative routes are needed to reach your destination. If you’re unsure whether your route or travel will be disrupted, we suggest contacting your airline, accommodation or tour operator before you set off. They will be able to give you the following information:
- The status of your flight
- The status of your accommodation
- If any areas near your destination are best avoided
- If any alternative arrangements need to be made
- The risk level associated with your destination

How could the wildfires affect my holiday?
Wildfires that are close to large transport hubs, roads or railways can cause diversions to be in place, that may mean your travel plans have to change somewhat. Any disruptions should be noted and avoided both for your safety, and to ensure you’re following local instructions.
What about my flight?
If your flight is cancelled due to a wildfire in the area, your airline or travel agent should primarily be your contact point. They may move you to an alternative flight, or arrange an alternative route, or refund the cancelled flight.
If your flight is delayed, make sure you keep your documentation in order in case it’s needed later to make a claim. You should keep copies of:
- Booking confirmation
- Boarding passes
- Cancellation or delay notices
- Any emails from the airline with relevant information
- A record of any alternative travel offered
- Receipts for reasonable expenses
- Any evidence of refunds or compensation given
