Going on holiday should be about making memories. If you have epilepsy, you might need a little extra planning — like managing your medication or checking local healthcare options. But that shouldn’t stop you from seeing the world.
You're not alone — around 600,000 people in the UK live with epilepsy. One of the most common questions we hear is, "Can I get travel insurance for epilepsy?" The answer at Able2Travel is yes.
Our travel insurance with epilepsy cover includes cover if your condition stops you from travelling or if you need emergency medical treatment abroad, to replacing essential medication, if it gets lost or delayed while you’re away.
You’ll also be protected for unexpected issues such as lost baggage, missed departures, or travel delays. That way, you can focus on enjoying your holiday instead of worrying about the what-ifs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Epilepsy Travel Insurance
1. Who Is Able2Travel Epilepsy Holiday Insurance For?
Our policies are designed for anyone who needs to declare epilepsy on their policy. Able2Travel epilepsy holiday insurance is suitable for people who:
- Have recently been diagnosed with epilepsy
- Are currently managing their condition (e.g., through medication, or other support)
- Have a history of epilepsy regardless of how long ago it was active
2. Do You Have to Declare Epilepsy on Holiday Insurance?
Yes, it's essential to declare epilepsy when taking out holiday insurance if you have a diagnosis or are receiving medication for it. This applies whether your epilepsy is mild, moderate, or severe.
And even if your epilepsy is well managed with medication and you no longer experience seizures, it’s still a pre-existing medical condition. So, you would still need to declare when you’re going through the medical screening.
Being open about your medical conditions helps to make sure you get the right protection for your needs and that your policy remains valid.
If there are any changes to your condition after buying your policy — please let us know so we can make sure your cover stays up to date.
3. Why Do I Need Holiday Insurance for Epilepsy If I Already Have GHIC?
With the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), you would have access to state-provided healthcare in the EU, at the same level as the local people would receive. However, it isn’t a substitute for holiday insurance because GHIC doesn’t cover everything.
For example, it won’t cover costs for private medical treatment and getting you home if medically needed (known as repatriation). Also, travel insurance for epileptics provides cover against problems like trip cancellations or lost baggage while abroad.
4. What Questions Will I Be Asked About My Epilepsy?
To make sure your epilepsy holiday insurance gives you the right cover, we’ll ask a few simple medical questions. Rest assured, your answers are always kept completely confidential.
They will typically cover areas such as:
- Seizure Activity – Details about how often they happen and what happens during them
- Hospital Admissions – Information about any unplanned hospital visits you've had for your condition in the last 12 months
- Current Treatment & Medical History – About the medication you're regularly prescribed and underlying cause of your condition
5. Which Type of Holiday Insurance for Epilepsy Policy Is Right for You?
At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of cover for travellers with epilepsy to choose from to suit how often you travel:
- Single Trip Cover – Designed for one-off trips. This policy protects you for the full duration of your trip from the moment you leave until you return home.
- Annual Multi-Trip Cover – Convenient option for travellers who love to travel more than once a year. This covers all your trips within a 12-month period.
6. What Destinations are Covered Under Holiday Insurance for Epileptics?
At Able2Travel, we offer cover for epileptics travelling to Europe and worldwide. From staycations in the UK to city breaks in Europe and long-haul worldwide trips. Our cover is divided into five areas:
UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)
- Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man. Suitable for those looking for epilepsy travel insurance for UK trips.
Europe Coverage
If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of epilepsy travel cover:
- Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
- Area 3: Includes all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey
Worldwide Coverage
If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide epilepsy holiday insurance. For this, there are two options to choose from:
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
- Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
