Planning a trip while you’re expecting should still feel exciting and enjoyable. You might just have a little more to think about before you go.

Many people ask: Is pregnancy a medical condition for travel insurance? The good news is the answer is no. The reason is that travel insurers consider pregnancy to be entirely normal and usually healthy state to be in.

However, if you have any pregnancy-related complications, such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. These complications are considered as pre-existing medical conditions.

Our pregnancy travel insurance is designed to cover a wide range of situations where complications could affect your trip. This includes cover if you need to cancel your holiday due to pregnancy-related complications.

It also includes cover if you require emergency medical treatment abroad, as well as common travel disruptions. For instance, travel delays, missed connections and lost baggage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy Travel Insurance

1. Can You Get Travel Insurance When Pregnant Up To 36 Weeks?

Yes, it may be possible to arrange travel insurance for pregnancy up to 36 weeks.

Before you purchase travel insurance, you should speak to your doctor or midwife. They can confirm whether you’re medically fit to travel abroad. It’s also important to check with your airline or travel provider, as many airlines don’t allow pregnant travellers at or beyond 36 weeks to fly.

2. Are Costs for Normal Childbirth Covered?

Please note: travel insurance will not cover the costs of a normal pregnancy or childbirth. This includes a planned caesarean section or any other assisted births where there are no complications, even if the birth occurs early. Anything medically abnormal or a complication would be considered for cover.

3. Do You Need to Declare Pregnancy on Travel Insurance?

Normal pregnancy is not usually treated as a pre-existing medical condition. Therefore, typically you don’t need to declare it when getting a travel insurance quote.

However, if you have experienced pregnancy-related complications, you would need to declare them when arranging pregnancy holiday insurance. Being open about any complications helps make sure your cover remains valid while travelling. If anything changes with your medical circumstances before you travel, it is important to let us know to ensure your cover remains up to date.

4. Does Travel Insurance Cover Pregnancy Complications?

The answer is often yes, as pregnancy-related complications are typically treated as pre-existing medical conditions. However, cover may be available depending on your individual circumstances. Below are some pregnancy-related complications that may be covered with Able2Travel:

  • High blood pressure related: Gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia
  • Early pregnancy: Ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage
  • Bleeding and placental: Bleeding during pregnancy, placental abruption
  • Labour and delivery: Medically necessary emergency caesarean sections or termination, threatened early labour*

* More than 12 weeks before the due date, or 16 weeks for multiple pregnancies.

If your condition isn’t listed here, don’t worry — these are just a few examples of what our policy has covered previously.

5. Why Do I Need Holiday Insurance with Pregnancy Cover If I Have a GHIC?

A GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) can provide access to state-provided healthcare in some EU countries, but it does not replace pregnant holiday insurance as it doesn't cover:

  • Private medical treatment, if this is the most appropriate place for you to receive treatment
  • Emergency medical transport back to the UK (medical repatriation)
  • Travel issues such as trip cancellation or lost baggage
6. Which Type of Holiday Insurance for Pregnant Travellers Is Right for You?

At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of holiday insurance for pregnancy, depending on how often you travel:

  • Single Trip Cover: Ideal for one-off trips. Cover starts from your trip start date and ends until the day you return home.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Cover: Suitable for travellers who are planning to travel more than once within a 12-month period.
