Travel Insurance After a Stroke
For the Love of Travel, with Cover Designed for After a Stroke
Recovering from a stroke doesn’t mean putting your travel plans on hold or missing out on the holidays you deserve.
We understand that travelling after a stroke can require a little more planning. You may have concerns about the risk of complications while you’re abroad, as well as the travelling aspects. For example, you might be thinking about managing your medication, arranging any mobility equipment you may need, finding out what medical support is available at your destination, and what to do in a medical emergency.
You’re not alone — in the UK, around 1.4 million people have experienced and survived a stroke. One of the questions we’re asked most often is, “Can I get travel insurance after a stroke?” At Able2Travel, the answer is usually yes, depending on your individual circumstances.
Our travel insurance after a stroke is designed to provide cover for a wide range of situations. This can include cover if your condition prevents you from travelling, if you need emergency medical treatment abroad, or if essential medication is lost, stolen, or delayed during your trip.
You’ll also be covered for common travel issues such as missed departures, delays, or lost baggage. This helps you focus on enjoying your trip with added reassurance while you’re away.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance After a Stroke
1. Does Travel Insurance Cover Stroke If Not Declared?
No — if you’ve had a stroke in the past and don’t declare this when purchasing your travel insurance, your policy may be invalid during your trip.
And if your health changes while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.
2. How Much Is Travel Insurance for After a Stroke?
There is no fixed average cost for travel insurance after a stroke. This is because the price of your policy depends on several factors. These usually include your age, destination, trip duration, and how well-managed your condition is.
The cost may also be affected if you have other pre-existing medical conditions that need to be declared on your policy.
3. What Will I Be Asked When Buying Stroke Holiday Insurance?
To help provide the right cover, you’ll need to answer a short set of medical screening questions when buying stroke holiday insurance. Rest assured, your responses are always kept strictly confidential.
Medical screening typically covers:
- Diagnosis & Medical History – Details about when your stroke occurred and whether you have experienced more than one stroke
- Associated Conditions – Any related health conditions linked to your stroke
- Current Treatment – Medications prescribed, or whether you’re awaiting tests, results, or surgery
4. Why Do I Need Stroke Travel Insurance If I Have a GHIC?
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) gives you access to state-provided healthcare in some European countries. However, it should not be relied on as a substitute for travel insurance for people who have had a stroke.
Travel insurance can provide cover for the costs of private medical treatment abroad and medically necessary transport back to the UK, often referred to as repatriation. It can also include cover for trip cancellation, travel delays, and lost luggage. These are not typically covered by a GHIC.
5. What Types of Travel Insurance for Post Stroke Are Available?
At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of cover, depending on how often you travel:
- Single Trip Cover: Designed for one-off holidays, with cover starting from the day your trip begins until you return home
- Annual Multi-Trip Cover: Designed for travellers who take more than one trip a year. It provides cover for multiple trips within a 12-month period
This way, whether you’re planning a single relaxing trip or travelling several times a year, you can find the right cover.
6. What Destinations Does Travel Insurance with Stroke Cover?
At Able2Travel, we offer travel insurance for someone who has had a stroke travelling to Europe and further afield. Our cover is divided into five areas:
UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)
- Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man.

- Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey
Worldwide Coverage
If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide travel insurance which includes cover for countries outside of Europe. There are two options to choose from:
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
