Frequently Asked Questions About Single Trip Travel Insurance
1. What Is Single Trip Travel Insurance and Who Should Consider It?
Single trip travel insurance is designed to protect you for one holiday — whether that’s a short city break in Europe or a once-in-a-lifetime adventure further afield. At Able2Travel, our single trip travel insurance is specially tailored for people with medical conditions, making it easier to find cover when you need it most.
Our policy is suitable for:
- Travellers living with long-term or chronic conditions
- Older travellers who may struggle to find suitable cover elsewhere
- Those who have recently been diagnosed with a new condition
2. Would an Annual Policy Be a Better Option Than Single Trip Holiday Insurance?
While single trip holiday insurance may cost less than an annual travel policy, it might not be the most cost-effective choice if you’re planning more than one trip in the next 12 months.
For example, if you’re travelling to Europe in the spring and then to the USA in the summer, you would need to buy two separate single trip policies. With an annual policy, both trips would be covered under one convenient plan.
Annual cover also saves time and effort with medical screening. Once you’ve declared your medical conditions, you won’t usually need to repeat the process unless your health changes. This cover then applies to every trip you take within the 12-month policy period and is available up to the age of 79.

3. Is Travel Insurance to Europe on a Single Trip Necessary If You Have a GHIC?
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) gives you access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries on the same terms as a local resident. However, it doesn’t cover everything you may need while abroad.
For example, the GHIC does not cover private medical treatment or the cost of being brought back to the UK if medically necessary (known as Repatriation). A travel insurance to Europe on a single trip policy can provide protection in these situations, along with other important benefits such as cover for trip cancellations, travel delays, or lost and damaged baggage.
4. How Does Single Trip Travel Insurance Work?
Cancellation cover starts from the moment you purchase your travel insurance or book your trip — whichever happens later. This means that if your plans change before you travel — for example, if your health changes and you’re no longer fit to travel — you’ll be protected as soon as your policy is active.
Just keep in mind, cancellation cover ends the moment you leave home to begin your journey. All other benefits of Able2Travel Single Trip Travel Insurance begin when you leave home to start your trip and end when you return.
5. Is There an Age Limit on Able2Travel Single Trip Policy?
For most of the world (Areas 1-4), there is no maximum age limit on all three levels of cover. However, if you’re getting single trip travel insurance to the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico (Area 5), the maximum age to purchase a policy is 79 years old.
6. What Is the Maximum Trip Duration on Single Trip Holiday Insurance?
The maximum length of cover available on a single trip policy depends on both your age and your destination:
- Up to 365 days if you are aged 65 or under
- Up to 45 days if you are aged 66 to 79
If you’re looking for single trip holiday insurance to Europe and destinations further afield, and you’re aged 80 or over, the maximum trip duration is shorter:
- Up to 31 days if you are aged 80 to 85
- Up to 23 days if you are aged 86 or above
7. What Destinations are Covered Under Able2Travel Single Trip Holiday Insurance?
At Able2Travel, we offer travel insurance for single trips to Europe and beyond. From staycations in the UK to city breaks in Europe and long-haul worldwide trips. Our cover is divided into five areas:
UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)
- Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man. Perfect if you’re looking for single trip travel insurance for a UK break
Europe Coverage
If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of single trip European travel insurance:
- Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
- Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey
Worldwide Coverage
If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need single trip worldwide travel insurance. For this, there are two options to choose from:
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
- Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
8. How Much Does Single Trip Travel Insurance Cost?
The cost of travel insurance for single trips depends on several factors:
- The destination and duration of your holiday
- The value of your trip
- Your age and the ages of everyone on the policy
- Any pre-existing health conditions you need to declare
- Chosen level of cover and any policy options added onto the policy
9. How to Get Your Holiday Insurance Quote for Single Trips?
Whether you need single trip travel insurance to Europe or worldwide, it’s straightforward with Able2Travel. It only takes five easy steps to arrange cover:
