Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance for Heart Conditions
1. Do You Have to Declare Your Heart Problems on Holiday Insurance?
Yes — all existing or ongoing heart problems must be declared when you get a quote for holiday insurance for heart problems.
Being open about your heart condition helps make sure you’re properly protected while travelling, and it also ensures your policy remains valid.
If there has been a change to your condition, such as a change in medication or symptoms, while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.
2. What Will I Be Asked When Buying Heart Condition Holiday Insurance?
To make sure your heart condition holiday insurance gives you the right cover, you’ll need to answer a few medical screening questions.
The questions will vary depending on your condition, but may include:
- Diagnosis & Medical History – What specific heart condition have you been diagnosed with, and how severe is it?
- Associated Conditions - Is your heart condition linked to any other health issues or complex related conditions?
- Medical Procedure – Have you had any procedures for your condition, what type were they, and how recently were they carried out?
- Hospital admissions – Have you been admitted to hospital for your condition in the last year?
- Current Treatment – Have you been referred to or treated by a specialist? What medication have you been prescribed? Are you currently waiting tests, results, or surgery?
3. Can I Rely on The GHIC Instead of Travel Insurance for Heart Problems?
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) provides you access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries, at the same level as a local would receive. However, it doesn’t replace holiday insurance for pre-existing heart conditions. The reason is that there are important limitations on what it can cover.
For example, it won’t cover costs for private medical treatment if necessary or emergency medical transport to get you home (known as medical repatriation).
Also, cover against trip cancellations, travel delays, lost/damaged luggage, and replacement of lost or delayed prescribed medications wouldn’t be covered under GHIC.
4. How Much Is Travel Insurance with Heart Condition?
The cost of travel insurance for someone with a heart condition isn’t a single fixed price, as it is based on several factors.
For instance, your age, trip duration, destination, and how well-managed your heart condition is. The price will also be influenced if you have any other pre-existing medical conditions to declare on your policy.
5. What Types of Holiday Insurance for Heart Conditions Can You Get?
Finding the appropriate holiday insurance for people with heart conditions begins with choosing the policy type that matches how often you travel. At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of cover to choose from:
- Single Trip Cover: Suitable for those who are going on one-off holiday, and the cover starts from the day you travel until you come back home
- Annual Multi-Trip Cover: Ideal if you’re planning to get on holiday more than once within a 12-month period. This would cover unlimited trips within that period.
6. What Destinations are Covered Under Holiday Insurance for Heart Problems?
At Able2Travel, we offer cover for people with heart conditions travelling to Europe and beyond. From staycations in the UK to city breaks in Europe and long-haul worldwide trips. Our cover is divided into five areas:
UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)
- Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man
Europe Coverage
If you’re travelling to Europe, you can choose between two types of holiday insurance with heart condition cover, depending on the countries you’re visiting:
- Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
- Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey
Worldwide Coverage
If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide holiday insurance for pre-existing heart conditions, which includes cover for countries outside of Europe. Able2Travel has two options to choose from:
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
- Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
