What is Travel Insurance for Medical Conditions and What Does it Cover?

While going on holiday or travelling abroad should be a fun and enjoyable experience, sometimes the unexpected can unfortunately happen. For example, having to cancel your travel plans if you tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19), losing your personal baggage when overseas, or having to pay medical expenses for emergency medical treatment during your holiday.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions, it is sometimes difficult to find a travel insurance policy with an appropriate level of coverage for your medical conditions too. Able2Travel Travel Insurance is specialist medical travel insurance designed to give people with or without pre-existing medical conditions financial peace of mind, so that you are covered should something unexpected happen and not left out of pocket, in the event of a valid claim.

Benefits of Travel Insurance for Medical Conditions

The following summary of the benefits of Travel Insurance for Medical Conditions are just some of the areas of cover included as standard across all levels of cover on our Able2Travel Travel Insurance policy. Please read the policy wording here for the full cover available under the policy.

Cancellation or Curtailment

A Cancellation is where you are unable to start your trip, due to an insured reason specified in the policy wording. And a Curtailment is where you have to end your trip earlier than expected, due to an insured reason. Read More.

This section provides cover for any unused and non-refundable travel and accommodation costs (including unused pre-booked excursions) that have been paid, or where there is a contract to pay that cannot be recovered. If it is necessary to cancel or curtail the planned trip because of any of the events specified in the policy wording. This includes if you need to go into hospital due to one of your medical conditions, providing it is declared and accepted by insurers, and you have paid any additional premium if required.

Emergency Medical Expenses & Repatriation

Medical treatment outside of the UK can be very expensive. This section covers the cost of emergency medical treatment, outside your home country if you’re injured or suffer unexpected illness including with symptoms of or testing positive for COVID-19 during your trip, in line with the policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Cover also includes the cost of repatriation back to your home country if medically necessary.

Please Note: If you have pre-existing medical conditions and need cover in case you require emergency medical treatment related to them, you will need to complete a medical screening beforehand to see if cover is available and pay the appropriate additional premium.

Travel Delay & Abandonment

No one would want to experience the frustration of their outbound trip being delayed when they are going on holiday! So, with Able2Travel Travel Insurance cover is available if the public transport (meaning any aeroplane, ship, train or coach) that you are booked to travel on is delayed by at least 12 hours. Read More.

If the journey departing from your home country is delayed for more than 12 hours and you choose to abandon your trip, instead of a payment for delay, you are covered for the cost of the trip under the Cancellation or Curtailment section of cover (Section 1).

Please Note: If your travel plans include going on a cruise, and your journey to get to the cruise gets interrupted, you may need to also purchase the Cruise Plus Cover option to cover them.

Personal Accident

In the event of a serious accident from which you suffer life changing injuries during your trip the policy will provide cover in the event of your death or permanent disablement because of the accident. Please refer to the policy wording for full details on this area of cover.

Please Note: Any immediate injuries you suffer from such an incident would be dealt with under the Emergency Medical Expenses section (Section 2).

Missed Departure & Connections

Cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses (on a bed & breakfast basis) in the event you missed the departure of your public transport for your trip, due to

  1. failure of public transport
  2. a road traffic or vehicle breakdown, delaying the vehicle you are travelling
  3. a delay of your own vehicle because of unexpected and unforeseen heavy traffic or road closures that were sufficiently severe to warrant reporting on recognised motoring association
Personal Baggage

Covers the loss, theft or damage to your baggage, meaning: personal belongings, including clothing worn, and personal luggage owned or borrowed by you that you take with you on your trip, as well as your valuables as defined in the policy wording.

Please Note: The gadgets that you take on holiday may not fall under the Baggage definition in the policy wording or the valuables limit, and meaning your gadgets may not have cover when you are abroad. So, you may need to also purchase the gadget cover Option to cover them.

These are a few of the reasons why getting specialist travel insurance for medical conditions is a good idea before you travel so you have the appropriate cover should an unexpected incident happen during your holiday. Furthermore, Able2Travel Travel Insurance has a wide range of features and benefits that is also available for senior travellers too! Please see the policy wording for full details.
