Frequently Asked Questions About HIV Travel Insurance

1. Who Is Able2Travel Travel Insurance Suitable For?

Our specialist policies are designed for anyone who needs to either declare HIV or AIDS, including those who:

  • Have recently been diagnosed with this pre-existing medical condition
  • Are currently managing their condition, whether they’re in the early stages of the condition or have progressed to AIDS
2. Do I Need to Declare HIV on My Travel Insurance?

We understand that sharing details about your health can feel personal, but rest assured all information is treated with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Yes, if you have a diagnosis or have received any treatment for HIV, it’s important that you declare this when purchasing your travel insurance.

Being open about your pre-existing medical conditions ensures you get the suitable cover for your needs and, most importantly, that your policy is valid.

If there has been a change to your condition, such as a change in medication or symptoms, while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.

3. What Will I Be Asked When Buying Holiday Insurance for HIV?

To make sure your holiday insurance with HIV provides the right cover, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions about your medical condition.

These will typically cover areas such as:

  • Recent Medications – Have you started on a new prescribed drug or will be starting a new one?
  • Current Health Information – What are your latest CD4 count and viral load results?
  • Medical Treatment – Has your doctor suggested starting or changing your current treatment?

Rest assured, your responses are always kept strictly confidential.

Please note: If your doctor has recommended starting or changing your treatment and you choose not to follow that advice, we may be unable to offer cover because you would be travelling against your doctor's advice.

4. What Types of Holiday Insurance with HIV Cover Are Available to Choose From?

At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of holiday insurance, depending on how often you travel:

  • Single Trip Cover: Ideal for a one-off holiday. The cover begins from the moment you depart until you return home.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Cover: Perfect for travellers who take multiple trips throughout the year. The option covers all trips taken within a 12-month period.
5. What Destinations Does HIV Holiday Insurance Cover?

At Able2Travel, we offer holiday insurance for people who have HIV and are travelling to Europe and further afield. From staycations in the UK to city breaks in Europe and long-haul worldwide trips. Our cover is divided into five areas:

UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)

  • Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man
  • Suitable for those looking for HIV travel insurance to UK holidays

Europe Coverage

If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of HIV holiday insurance, based on the countries you are travelling to:

  • Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
  • Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey

Worldwide Coverage

If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide HIV holiday insurance, which includes cover for countries outside of Europe. There are two options to choose from:

  • Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
  • Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
6. Why Do I Need Travel Insurance with AIDS or HIV if I Have a GHIC?

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) is not a substitute for travel insurance. While it gives you access to state-provided healthcare in countries in the EU, there are some areas that are not covered by it.

For instance, private medical treatment costs are not covered by a GHIC. If you medically need to be returned to the UK (known as repatriation), this isn’t covered by a GHIC either.

Additionally, HIV or AIDS travel insurance can also provide cover for unexpected travel incidents such as trip cancellation, travel delays, and lost or damaged luggage.

7. How to Get Your Quote for Travel Insurance for HIV?

For travellers looking for HIV travel insurance, the process is simple with Able2Travel:

  1. Tell us about your trip – choose your destination, when you’d like cover to begin, and who will be travelling
  2. Complete the medical screening about your HIV or other medical conditions you have had – this can be done online or over the phone
  3. Get your personalised quote
  4. Compare three levels of cover and choose the option that suits you best
