Frequently Asked Question About Seniors Travel Insurance

1. Which Types of Holiday Insurance for Seniors Should You Choose?

Able2Travel offers two types of holiday insurance for seniors, depending on how often you travel:

While single trip cover may cost less, an annual policy can save time. Once your medical conditions are declared, you usually won’t need to repeat screening unless your health changes. Cover then applies to every trip within the policy period.

2. How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for Seniors?

The cost of your senior travel insurance for pre-existing conditions depends on several factors, including:

  • Your age and the age of any travellers on the policy
  • The level of cover selected and any optional extras
  • Your destination area
  • Trip duration
  • Any declared medical conditions
3. Is There an Age Limit on Able2Travel Seniors Citizen Travel Insurance?

For most of the world (Areas 1-4), there is no maximum age limit on all three levels of cover. However, for travel to the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico (Area 5), or for annual multi-trip policies, the maximum age to purchase cover is 79 years.

4. Is there a Maximum Trip Duration for Senior Citizens?

The maximum trip duration length of cover available on a single trip policy depends on both your age and your destination:

Age UK Europe Worldwide
65 or under 365 days 365 days 365 days
66–79 45 days 45 days 45 days
80–85 31 days 31 days 31 days*
86+ 23 days 23 days 23 days*

Annual policies have a standard maximum trip length of 31 days, with extension options depending on age and cover level.

  • Aged 65 or under: up to 45 or 60 days on Gold or Platinum cover
  • Aged 66 to 75: up to 45 days on Gold or Platinum cover

*Please note: no cover available for travellers aged 80+ travelling to worldwide locations including USA, Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico.

5. What Destinations are Covered Under Able2Travel Seniors Holiday Insurance?

Able2Travel provides holiday insurance for senior citizens covering the UK, Europe and worldwide destinations. Our cover is divided into five areas:

UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)

  • Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man
  • Ideal if you’re looking for seniors travel insurance for a UK break

Europe Coverage

  • Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
  • Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey

Worldwide Coverage

  • Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
  • Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
6. Does Travel Insurance for Seniors with Medical Conditions Cover Independent Travel?

Yes — independent travel is available under Platinum level cover. Please note that Platinum must be selected when purchasing your annual policy.

7. How to Get a Quote for Seniors Citizen Travel Insurance?

Getting a senior citizen travel insurance quote with Able2Travel is straightforward:

  1. Tell us about your trip – choose your destination, when you’d like cover to begin, and who will be travelling
  2. Complete the medical screening about any health issues you have had – this can be done online or over the phone
  3. Get your personalised quote
  4. Compare travel insurance for seniors across three levels of cover and choose the option that suits you best
  5. Add optional extras to tailor the policy to your needs, such as cruise cover or winter sports cover
8. Why Should I Get Seniors Holiday Insurance If I Have a GHIC?

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) provides access to state healthcare in the EU. However, it doesn’t replace travel insurance for seniors with pre-existing conditions, as it doesn’t cover:

  • Private medical treatment, if this is the most appropriate place for you to be treated
  • Trip cancellations, travel delays, or lost/damaged luggage
  • Emergency medical transport back to the UK (known as repatriation)

With senior holiday insurance, you also get cover for unexpected incidents like trip cancellations, travel delays, or lost/damaged baggage while you’re away.

9. What Happens If My Medical Condition Changes After I’ve Bought a Policy?

If your health changes after you have bought your travel insurance, please let us know promptly to ensure you remain fully covered. You need to tell us if you have any change where you had to:

  • See a specialist or consultant
  • Go to hospital for treatment, tests, or surgery
  • Wait for treatment or test results
  • Change your regular medication
