Frequently Asked Questions About Hypothyroidism Travel Insurance

1. Who Is Able2Travel Hypothyroidism Travel Insurance For?

Our specialist policies are designed for anyone who needs to declare hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid, including those who:

  • Have recently been diagnosed with underactive thyroid
  • Are currently managing their condition through medication
2. Do You Have to Declare Your Underactive Thyroid on Travel Insurance?

Yes. If you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), you should declare it when getting a travel insurance quote.

During the medical screening process, you'll be asked a few straightforward questions about your condition. For example, you may be asked whether you have received treatment within the last 12 months.

Being open about your condition ensures you get the suitable cover for your needs and, most importantly, that your policy is valid.

If your health changes while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.

3. Does Hypothyroidism Affect Travel Insurance Price?

Yes. Hypothyroidism is considered a pre-existing medical condition and should be declared during the medical screening process.

Depending on your circumstances, this may result in an additional premium being applied to your policy. This helps ensure you have suitable cover in place for your trip.

4. What Policy Types of Underactive Thyroid Travel Insurance Are Available?

Able2Travel provides flexible travel insurance options for underactive thyroid to suit a variety of needs:

  • Single Trip Cover: Designed for a specific getaway, and cover starts to the end of your trip.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Cover: A convenient option for frequent travellers, covering multiple trips within a 12-month period.
5. Why Do I Need Travel Insurance for Hypothyroidism If I Have a GHIC?

A GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) can provide access to state-provided healthcare in some EU countries. However, it isn’t a substitute for travel insurance, since the GHIC doesn’t cover everything. Travel insurance provides cover for:

  • Private medical treatment, if this is the most suitable option for you to receive treatment
  • Medical repatriation (the cost of getting you back to the UK if it's medically needed)
  • Trip cancellations or interruptions due to your condition
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged belongings
  • Replacement of lost or delayed prescribed medications
6. What Destinations are Covered Under Travel Insurance for Underactive Thyroid?

At Able2Travel, we offer underactive thyroid travel cover to Europe and beyond. From staycations in the UK to city breaks in Europe and long-haul worldwide trips. Our cover is divided into five areas:

UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)

  • Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man

Europe Coverage

If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of cover for Europe, based on the countries you are travelling to:

  • Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
  • Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey

Worldwide Coverage

If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need a worldwide policy for countries outside of Europe. Able2Travel has two options to choose from:

  • Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
  • Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
