Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance After TIA

1. Who Is Able2Travel Mini-Stroke Travel Insurance For?

Our specialist policies are designed for those who need to declare TIA or mini stroke. This includes travellers who:

  • Have recently been diagnosed with TIA
  • Are currently managing their condition (e.g., through medication, or other support)
  • Have a history of TIA, regardless of how long ago it occurred
2. Why Do You Need to Declare TIA on Travel Insurance?

Yes — TIA is a pre-existing medical condition. So, when buying travel insurance for TIA sufferers, you must declare it during the medical screening process.

Being open about your medical conditions helps ensure you get the right cover and that your policy remains valid.

If there has been a change to your condition, while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.

3. What Will I Be Asked When Buying Mini Stroke Travel Insurance?

To help provide the right cover, you’ll need to answer a short set of medical screening questions when buying mini stroke travel insurance.

Medical screening typically covers:

  • Diagnosis & Medical History – Information about when your mini stroke happened and whether you have experienced more than one TIA
  • Associated Conditions – Any related health conditions linked to your mini-stroke
  • Current Treatment – Medications prescribed, or whether you’re awaiting tests, results, or surgery

Rest assured, your responses are always kept strictly confidential.

4. Which Type of TIA Holiday Insurance Policies Are Available?

At Able2Travel, we offer two main types of TIA holiday insurance to suit your plans:

  • Single Trip Cover: Ideal for a one-off holiday. This policy provides cover from the start to the end of your trip.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Cover: Suitable for those who enjoy travelling frequently as it covers all your trips within a 12-month period.
5. Why Do I Need Travel Insurance After a Mini-Stroke If I Have a GHIC?

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) gives you access to state-provided healthcare in the EU at the same level as a local would receive. However, it should not be relied on as a substitute for travel insurance for people who have had a stroke.

Travel insurance can provide cover for the costs of private medical treatment abroad and medically necessary transport back to the UK, often referred to as repatriation. It can also include cover for trip cancellation, travel delays, and lost luggage. These are not typically covered by a GHIC.

6. What Destinations Does Travel Insurance with Mini-Stroke Cover?

At Able2Travel, we offer travel insurance for people who have had a mini stroke, whether travelling to Europe or further afield. Our cover is divided into five areas:

UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)

  • Area 1: Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man

Europe Coverage

If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of travel insurance for mini stroke, based on the countries you are travelling to:

  • Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
  • Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey

Worldwide Coverage

If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide travel insurance which includes cover for countries outside of Europe. There are two options to choose from:

  • Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
  • Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
