Autism Travel Insurance

Yes. Whether you have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) level 1 or level 3, it is considered as a pre-existing medical condition. This means you must declare it during the medical screening process when purchasing your travel insurance.

If you have received a diagnosis that you have autism and don’t declare this when purchasing your travel insurance, your policy may be invalid during your trip.

Being open about your medical conditions helps ensure you get the right protection and that your policy remains valid.

And if your health changes while your policy is active, it’s also important to let us know so your cover stays up to date.

To make sure your holiday insurance provides the right cover, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions about your medical condition.

These will typically cover areas such as:

• The Impact on Your Daily Life – How does autism affect the way you communicate or respond to stressful situations?
• Associated Conditions – Have you been diagnosed with any other medical conditions?
• Effects On Travel Plans – Has your condition ever caused you to cancel or cut short a trip, and if so, when did this happen?

With the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), you would have access to state-provided healthcare at certain European countries. However, there are limitations on what it can cover, and it isn’t a replacement for travel insurance.

For example, it doesn’t cover costs for private medical treatment if this is the most suitable option for you to receive treatment, should you get ill or sustain injury abroad. As well as the costs of getting you back home if medically needed (known as repatriation).

Additionally, travel insurance provides cover against problems like trip cancellations or interruptions, lost or damaged baggage, and replacement of prescribed medications if it is lost or delayed.

Europe Coverage

If you’re going on holiday to Europe, you can choose between two types of holiday insurance for autism, based on the countries you are travelling to:

• Area 2: Includes all countries in Area 1, Western & Northern Europe, Mediterranean Islands, and Eastern Europe
• Area 3: Include all countries in Areas 2, and including Turkey

Worldwide Coverage

If your trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide holiday insurance with autism, which includes cover for countries outside of Europe. There are two options to choose from:

• Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 and 3 (excluding the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico)
• Area 5: Includes all countries including those in Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4
